Cada cilio est\u00e1 formado por microt\u00fabulos unidos por estructuras proteicas denominadas radios ciliares y brazos de dine\u00edna (v\u00e9ase la fig. 2). Gracias a esta compleja estructura interna, los cilios se mueven siguiendo un patr\u00f3n definido, se doblan y baten. Los primeros estudios con animales mostraron que el movimiento se trataba de un empuje de potencia (\u00abPower Stroke\u00bb) hacia delante y luego una \u00abbatido de recuperaci\u00f3n\u00bb (\u00abrecovery stroke\u00bb) que lo hace moverse hacia atr\u00e1s y se da un movimiento de combadura (ver v\u00eddeo en fig.3). Con la llegada de la imagen digital de alta velocidad ha sido posible demostrar que los cilios respiratorios baten hacia delante y hacia atr\u00e1s dentro del mismo plano sin un batido de recuperaci\u00f3n lateral.<br \/>Los cilios respiratorios humanos laten con una frecuencia de entre 12 y 15 Hz en la nariz y las v\u00edas respiratorias principales. Un pulm\u00f3n sano dispone de l\u00edquido, generado por el movimiento osm\u00f3tico del agua del epitelio y el movimiento de los iones de sodio (Na+) y cloruro (Cl-), para mantener la profundidad de las capas de gel y sol, (y por tanto, para facilitar el transporte de la mucosidad). El l\u00edquido periciliario es esencial para evitar la sequedad de las v\u00edas respiratorias por el flujo de aire al respirar y, sin \u00e9l, el moco se acumular\u00eda poco a poco en placas que acabar\u00edan obstruyendo las v\u00edas respiratorias (Bustamante-Mar\u00edn y Ostrowski, 2017).<br \/>Este proceso puede verse alterado en pacientes enfermos o en pulmones enfermos. La consecuencia m\u00e1s com\u00fan de una enfermedad aguda es la deshidrataci\u00f3n sist\u00e9mica, que incide de forma directa en el agua disponible para su transporte al l\u00edquido periciliario. Un ejemplo m\u00e1s concreto ser\u00eda la mucoviscidosis, que afecta al gen CFTR, responsable del flujo de iones cloruro, y a los canales de sodio superficiales. Una de estas glicoprote\u00ednas es la mucina. La mucina, secretada por las c\u00e9lulas caliciformes y en funci\u00f3n de la concentraci\u00f3n de iones en la regi\u00f3n periciliar, absorbe agua para mantener la lubricaci\u00f3n de las superficies ciliadas y atrae a los agentes pat\u00f3genos para facilitar la fagocitosis. El \u00faltimo hidrata el epitelio de forma directa.
